In preparation for dressing your dog to impress, you might be wondering how to measure them before buying new gear—an adjustable harness, a reversible harness, step-in dog harness, or a collar. Boogs & Boop dog accessories come in various sizes depending on print, fabric, and type, so before you buy, measure your dog to avoid the frustration of having to exchange or return an item.

Here’s how to measure your dog accurately and the measurements you’ll need for each type of accessory we carry:

A. Neck girth (for harnesses and collars)

• This is the circumference of your dog’s neck, generally where the collar sits.
• Position the tape measure from the dog’s withers—the ridge between the shoulder blades—to the top of your pup's chest.
• Then measure all the way around your dog’s neck, holding the tape measure closely, keeping in mind the difference coat floof can make.
• To ensure a safe and snug fit without causing pain, use the 'two-finger rule' by slipping two fingers between the measuring tape and your dog. 
• If your dog is between sizes, choose the larger size for comfort.

B. Chest girth (for harnesses only)

• This is the measurement around the largest part of your dog’s rib cage, usually just behind their front legs.
• Measure closely all the way around your pup's chest when they are standing.
• Use the 'two-finger rule' once again.
• If your dog is between sizes, always choose the larger size.

Important Tips:

• Size Charts Differ by Product: Read the product details carefully. Some products are sized by the dog’s measurements; others are sized by the dimensions of the actual product.
• Use a Soft Tape Measure: A soft, flexible tape measure conforms to your dog’s body shape, providing more accurate measurements around the chest and neck than rigid tools.
• Assess Movement: Observe your dog while they move around in their new accessories. Ensure that it doesn't restrict their movement or rub in any sensitive areas.
• Re-Check Fit Regularly: Dogs can change in size due to weight fluctuations or growth, so regularly re-check the fit and adjust as necessary.
• Consider Layering: When sizing a harness, keep in mind any additional layers your dog may wear, such as sweaters or coats during colder months. Make sure the harness is sized to accommodate these layers without compromising the fit or comfort.
